Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology, Microbiology and Communicable Diseases (SRIEMCD MoH UZB) was organized in 1961 on the basis of Decree of Cabinet of Ministers as of 7 December, 1959 № 900 and Decree of Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan SSR as of 29 October 1961 № 1777-R.

The Institute is the Center on conducting and coordination of research on epidemiology, microbiology, communicable and parasitic diseases in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Main directions of activities of the SRIEMCD MoH UZB:

1. Development of new pathogenetic concepts on acute intestinal infections, zoonoses, parasitic diseases.

2. Development of modern basis of epidemiologic monitoring of the most important communicable diseases.

3. Studying peculiarities of modern clinical course of the most important communicable diseases in Uzbekistan.

4. Development and implementation into healthcare practice new methods of diagnostics of communicable diseases.

5. Improvement of methods of pathogenetic therapy of the most important communicable diseases in Uzbekistan.

6. Creation of new methods of mathematic modeling of the most important communicable diseases for development of short- and long-term forecast.

These days there are working 58 staff at the SRIEMCD, 23 of them are researchers, including 9 Doctors of Sciences, 15 PhD. There are working 399 staff members at the clinic of the SRIEMCD, including 49 physicians (7 out of them are PhD), 172 – specialized secondary education staff. There were defended 55 Doctoral and PhD dissertations during 20 years of Independence of Uzbekistan.

Main scientific and clinical achivements of the SRIEMCD

The Institute is studying local peculiarities of epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnostics and prevention of typhoid fever and salmonellosis, certain shigelloses, dysentery-form diseases, brucellosis, cholera, choleroid diseases, vaccine preventable child infections and TORCH infections, parasitic diseases. The work is going on to study chronic bacteria carrying at the above mentioned bacterial communicable diseases, to study the role of opportunistic enterobacteria in etiology of acute intestinal infections, on preserving the national collections “Microorganisms of human”, “Collection of fungi, causing human mycosis”, which are recognized unique in Central Asian region. The results of research are implemented to healthcare practice through development of new methods of diagnostics and approaches in treatment of communicable and parasitic diseases.

Main recent research achievements of the Institute

The analysis of immunization conducted against epidemic parotitis has shown, that 32% of children to 6-8 years age stay susceptible to epidemic parotitis, regardless to immunization made. The insufficient positive effect of vaccination can be caused by low immunological characteristics of number of vaccine series.

There is obtained reliable evidence that patients with TB have higher rate of ascaridiasis, which leads to increase of hepatic enzymes level and significantly worsen immunological shifts.

There is proven therapeutic effectiveness of domestic medicine Ekdisten in treatment of lambliasis.

At typhoid fever there is established, that in the process of realization of high level immunogenesis in response to S. typhi antigen the intensive crisscross Zinc redistribution from blood serum to neutrophils occurs, which by its time coincides with the maximum increase of neutrophils functional methabolic activity in НСТ-test and levels of ASL to AG of S. typhi, which later conditions high level of specific antibody production.

The research we have performed revealed high rotavirus infection morbidity amongst children, its apparent seasonality, low culturing of “classic” enteropathogens in children under 2, mixed-infection cases in the tested patients. There is identified high prevalence of multi-drug resistant strains of Salmonella.

There is tested the new method botulism treatment using anti-botulinic serum, which prevents development of serum sickness.

The clinic of SRIEMCD is designed for 206 beds, the 7 units functional at the moment, include resuscitation and intensive care and artificial kidney which are equipped with modern medical equipment. There are functioning clinical, biochemical, bacteriological and immunological laboratories, which use modern diagnostic methods. The work of PCR laboratory is in the process of setting up.

The Institute staff makes its contribution to fight communicable and parasitic diseases in the country providing methodological and practical assistance in the regions of the country, drafting Ministerial orders, practical recommendations, methodological recommendations and instructions, other directive documents for PHC level of health care system. Special attention is paid to development and implementation of standard and new methods of diagnostics and treatment of communicable and parasitic diseases to healthcare practice.
